1) You will be asked not to wear perfume,
cologne, makeup of any kind, or hairspray on the day of surgery.
2)
Your eyes will be measured again.
3)
You will be given a mild sedative.
4)
In the laser suite, you will lie on a stretcher and numbing drops
will be placed in both eyes.
5)
The eye not undergoing surgery will be patched and a gentle retainer
will be placed in the operative eye to help keep the eyelids open.
6)
Dr. Misra will talk you through the entire procedure: there won’t
be any surprises.
7)
You will be asked to focus on a flashing red light that will at
times be blurry. Your focus will be monitored by the laser as well
as by Dr. Misra.
8)
In patients undergoing LASIK, a corneal flap will be created using
a specialized instrument known as a microkeratome. During this time,
you will feel pressure in the eye and your vision will get dim.
Once the flap is created, the vision will quickly return.
9)
In patients undergoing PRK, no flap will be created. Instead, the
surface layer of cells will be gently removed using an automated,
circular brush.
10)
The laser treatment will then be performed. You will hear various
sounds.
11)
In LASIK, the flap will be replaced once the laser treatment is
complete. The flap will be rechecked one hour afterwards.
12)
In some patients undergoing PRK, once the laser treatment is complete,
a medication will be briefly applied to the surface of the eye to
improve healing, then rinsed off. A contact lens will then be placed
on the surface of the eye; this will be removed within a few days
and is not to be handled by the patient.
13)
After the procedure is complete, you will be given postoperative
instructions as well as an appointment to see Dr. Misra the following
morning.
